Reading Recovery Tutors are key people in the implementation of Reading Recovery. They provide year long inservice training courses for Reading Recovery teachers and ongoing professional development sessions, school visits, and consultancy services to Reading Recovery teachers and schools.
Professional training for Reading Recovery Tutors (called Teacher Leaders in USA and Canada) is conducted regularly as a year-long, full-time programme of study at The University of Auckland Faculty of Education.
Postgraduate Diploma in Education
The University of Auckland Faculty of Education awards a Postgraduate Diploma in Education for successful completion of the training programme.
The Diploma covers the 5 following areas:
teaching Reading Recovery children
academic study in the areas of Developmental Psychology, Literacy Theories and Research and Issues in Literacy Difficulties
training and supporting Reading Recovery teachers
training in organization and administration of effective Reading Recovery services
training in supporting Reading Recovery in schools and districts.
Applicants for Reading Recovery Tutor training should have:
successful junior class teaching experience
experience in or potential for educational leadership
evidence of on-going professional development and capability
for continuing academic study
good team and organisational skills
